How to clean render safely (and why you should never jet-wash it)

22 April 2026 · 4 min read

A clean, uniform rendered house wall after low-pressure cleaning

Render goes green and grubby over time, especially on shaded or north-facing walls. The instinct is to reach for a pressure washer, but render is the one surface where that's a real mistake. A gentle, low-pressure clean is the safe alternative, and it's how render should be cleaned. Here's what that means.

Why you should never jet-wash render

A pressure washer is far too aggressive for render. High pressure cracks and blows the finish off the wall, forces water behind it, and leaves you with patches and damage that cost a fortune to put right. Render is designed to be cleaned gently, not blasted.

The low-pressure way to clean render

Cleaning render properly means working at very low pressure so the surface is never damaged. We do it with water alone, gently lifting the algae, green and grime off the render without harsh chemicals and without blasting the finish. It's the same care we take with delicate stone, applied to your walls.

Is it safe for my house?

Yes. Because it's low pressure and water alone, it's safe for the render, safe for your plants and safe for pets and children. There's no aggressive chemical run-off, and nothing gets forced into the wall. You get a clean, even finish without the risk that comes with a pressure washer.

How long does it stay clean?

A proper low-pressure clean lifts the growth rather than just wetting it, so the wall stays looking fresh for a good while. Shaded walls that green up fastest may benefit from a refresh every year or two. Send a photo of your render on WhatsApp and Mark will give you a fixed price the same day.

Common questions

Can you pressure wash render?

No, and you shouldn't. A pressure washer cracks and strips render. We clean it at low pressure instead - with water alone - so it's cleaned gently without any damage.

Is low-pressure cleaning safe for painted or coloured render?

Yes. It's low pressure and uses water alone, so it lifts the green and grime without stripping or fading the finish.

How often should render be cleaned?

It depends on how shaded the wall is. North-facing and tree-shaded render greens up fastest and may benefit from a refresh every year or two.
